Why Your Identity Is the Only Thing Standing Between You and Your Next Level with Dr. Ryan Cole | E27
In this episode, Sherry sits down with Dr. Ryan Cole — performance psychologist, executive coach, and one of the most cited researchers on identity and behavioral change — to talk about the thing no productivity system, morning routine, or goal-setting framework can fix on its own: the gap between who you are and who you need to become. Dr. Cole has spent twenty years studying why high performers plateau, and the answer almost always comes back to identity. Not effort. Not strategy. Identity. This conversation will change the way you think about why change is hard, and what actually makes it stick.
Dr. Ryan Cole is a performance psychologist, executive coach, and the founder of The Cole Method — a behavioral change framework used by Olympic athletes, Fortune 100 executives, and entrepreneurs who have hit a ceiling they can't push through with willpower alone. He holds a doctorate in applied psychology from Stanford and has spent over two decades researching the relationship between identity, belief, and sustained high performance. His work has been featured in Harvard Business Review, The Atlantic, and TEDx stages across the country. His book, The Identity Gap: Why You Keep Stopping Short of Your Potential, became a staple on the reading lists of CEOs, coaches, and anyone who has ever wondered why knowing better doesn't automatically lead to doing better.

What the Identity Gap actually is the precise psychological reason why effort alone can't close the distance between where you are and where you want to be.
Why self-sabotage is almost never about fear of failure — and the counterintuitive reason high achievers are most likely to sabotage success right when it's within reach.
Dr. Cole's "Identity Audit" — the three questions he uses with every new client to surface the self-concept that's been quietly setting the ceiling on their results.
The difference between behavior change and identity change — and why one lasts while the other always seems to wear off after three to four weeks.
How to begin closing the Identity Gap starting today without toxic positivity, forced affirmations, or pretending to be someone you're not yet.

Calm
The app I actually use when my brain won't slow down. Given that this entire episode is about what's happening underneath the surface — the identity work, the subconscious patterns — I think it's worth saying that none of that work happens without space to actually think. Calm gives me that space. The sleep stories got me through some of my hardest seasons. The daily meditations are the one habit I've kept longer than anything else. If you've been meaning to start — or restart — a mindfulness practice, this is the one worth doing. Get 40% off a Calm Premium subscription at calm.com/sherry.

Ryan, I want to start with the thing that I think is going to make a lot of people uncomfortable. Because I talk about mindset constantly — it's basically the entire premise of this podcast — and even I find myself sometimes thinking, "okay but if mindset is everything, why do I still stop myself?" Like — I know the stuff. So why doesn't knowing it automatically fix it?
Dr. Ryan Cole
Because knowledge and identity are two completely different systems. And we've spent decades in the personal development space treating them like they're the same. You can know exactly what you need to do — the research is clear, the strategy is sound — and still not do it. Not because you're weak or undisciplined. Because your identity hasn't caught up. And your behavior will almost always default to who you believe you are rather than what you know you should do. Every single time.
Sherry Brooks
Okay so break that down. What do you mean when you say identity — because I think that word gets used a lot and means a lot of different things to different people.
Dr. Ryan Cole
At its most basic — your identity is the answer to the question "who am I?" But it's not the answer you give consciously. It's the answer your nervous system gives automatically, in every single moment, without you having to think about it. It's built from thousands of micro-experiences, repeated over years, that your brain coded into a story: "this is the kind of person I am." And here's the thing — your brain's primary job is not to help you grow. It's to keep your behavior consistent with that story. So when your actions start to drift away from who you believe yourself to be, your brain pulls you back. That's the ceiling. That's the self-sabotage. That's the "I don't know why I keep doing this." It's identity protection.
Sherry Brooks
Identity protection. So the brain isn't working against us — it's actually doing exactly what it was designed to do. It's just designed around an older version of who we were.
Dr. Ryan Cole
Precisely. And when you understand that, the self-judgment starts to dissolve a little. You're not broken. You're not lacking willpower. You have a highly efficient brain doing its job — and the job just needs to be updated. That's what the Identity Gap is. The distance between the self-concept you're carrying right now and the self-concept that matches the life you're trying to build. Strategy can't close that gap. Habit stacking can't close it. Only identity work closes it — and most people have never been shown what that actually looks like in practice.
