The Money Story You Inherited That's Keeping You Broke with Dr. Amara Osei | E29

Most women Sherry talks to are smart, capable, and completely sabotaging their own income without knowing it. In this episode, certified financial therapist Dr. Amara Osei breaks down why the problem isn't your strategy or your spreadsheet. It's the story you absorbed about money before you were old enough to question it.

Dr. Osei works with high-achieving women who earn well on paper but can't seem to hold onto wealth, charge what they're worth, or stop feeling guilty every time they spend money on themselves. She and Sherry get into the specifics — where these stories come from, how they show up in your business, and the exact process Dr. Osei uses to rewrite them for good.

Sherry Brooks: Amara, welcome to the show. I have been wanting to have this conversation for a long time because I talk about mindset constantly but money mindset specifically — I feel like it deserves its own deep dive.

Dr. Amara Osei: Thank you for having me. I completely agree. Money is one of the last taboo topics and it is also one of the most emotionally loaded ones, which is exactly why I ended up doing what I do.

Sherry: Let's start at the beginning. What is a money story and how does someone even know they have one?

Dr. Osei: Everyone has one. A money story is essentially the collection of beliefs, emotions, and rules you have about money that were formed in childhood — usually before age ten — through what you observed, what you were told, and what you experienced. Most people have never consciously examined theirs. They just live by it.
